Creative Practice
What excites me most about creative technologies is the opportunity to cultivate, direct, and collaborate with emergence. Life itself is an emergent phenomenon, as is intelligence. This is true for both biological and artificial systems. My work often explores the potential symbiosis between these domains. Such ideas, along with the growing ambiguity between the physical and the virtual, inform my immersive virtual worlds, 3D-printed sculptures, and high-resolution images and animations.
My work is an investigation of the creative process itself and its capacity to inspire awe, engage imagination, and provoke insight. I’ve experimented with diverse processes, media, and technologies to understand and harness emergent behavior in my practice.
Emergence occurs when novel properties and behaviors arise from interactions among the parts of a system. These properties and behaviors are not inherent to, nor predictable from, the parts themselves. Emergence is the fundamental process by which complexity and novelty manifest across all domains, including the natural, technological, and conceptual contexts that drive my artistic inquiry.
When generative AI emerged, I was eager to explore its potential for emergent behavior. I integrate it with digital painting and compositing in an iterative process to create highly detailed, large-format prints.
Throughout my practice, I aim to integrate emergence with intentionality and direct manipulation. My goal is to create novel works that expand the possibilities of art, inspire awe, engage the imagination, and provoke insight.
