Conversation - 2020
20" x 16" - Canvas print
I've always admired the work of Johannes Vermeer. Like Vermeer's paintings, this scene depicts an ordinary moment from everyday life, but this ordinary moment is in a distant future reality. Three future beings have come together to converse and enjoy the wonderful indirect light in an environment inspired by Vermeer.
In this distant future, humans have evolved beyond physical limitations. Many recognizable human attributes have been left behind, but certain elements of the distant past are preserved and revered. In this case, an environment inspired by the paintings of Vermeer.
The juxtaposition of photorealism and abstraction is an ongoing theme in my work. I create photorealistic depictions of unfamiliar, unrecognizable abstract objects and environments. My artificial-life creatures, which I call Blorts, embody this idea. Sometimes I push the abstract a little into the recognizable. This provides a bit of additional accessible context while still invoking novelty and mystery in order to defy the mind's tendency to identify, classify, and dismiss.
Conversation represents a conversation between the art of the past and the art of the future.
