Geometric Awakening
8" - Cyanacrylate infiltrated plaster
"Geometric Awakening" won first place in the 2014 3D Printer World Expo abstract art contest. Participants were asked to conceptualize the spirit of the emerging 3D printing revolution by creating a 3D printable sculpture that captured the essence of the word "renaissance."
The concept for this piece was to both demonstrate and symbolize the new possibilities that 3d printing affords by depicting an explosion of complexity that is both fluid and geometric.
I began with a fluid dynamic simulation of a splash, which was converted to a volume and manually sculpted to achieve an idealized form and hollow out the center area. The inner section was created by scattering points into an inverted narrow pyramid. The points were connected procedurally to create a tangle of wires. Boxes were copied to points on the wires and scaled based on their vertical position in the sculpture along with a random factor. The entire sculpture was then advected with a procedural noise function to give it a cohesive fluid form.
