Frank's Free Flowing Self Awareness
24" x 18" Physically based rendering of 3d printed virtual sculpture - Dye sublimation print on aluminum panel
Frank's Free Flowing Self Awareness is a visualization of the fluid nature of self awareness. Its shapes are both distinct and interconnected. The piece is designed to inspire contemplation and imagination regarding the nature of self.
For this series I created a simulation of the nylon material used in 3D printing. The image above is a physically based rendering, or virtual photograph, of a simulation of the 3d printed virtual sculpture. Notice the scattering of the light through the translucent nylon material. In computer graphics, this property is called sub-surface scattering (SSS).
The concept behind this is the dissolution of traditional boundaries through technology. These pieces are simultaneously 2d, 3d, sculpture, painting, photography, photorealistic, abstract, real and virtual. They are ironic and meta.
