"Penguin Abstracted" 16" tall laser sintered nylon 3d printed sculpture
Tencent Holdings Limited, a mass media, entertainment, internet, mobile phone service and game company from China, held a special event at the 2014 Game Developer's Conference (GDC) in San Francisco at the St. Regis Hotel. I was commissioned to create a 3d printed sculpture to commemorate the event. A 3" limited edition 3d print of the sculpture was given as a gift to attendees. At the event, they exhibited large 3d prints of my sculptures, large canvas prints of my recent "Amalgamation" series, and they projected a compilation of my abstract animations on large screens in the dining room.
I began by sculpting a volumetric representation of their mascot, the QQ penguin. Next, I selectively pushed and pulled the penguin into an abstract form. Then, after hollowing it out, I cut an array of selectively placed holes. It is designed to be an object of contemplation that inspires imagination, fascination and creative consciousness.
